Project Description

ROOTS explores the intersection between traditional brand strategy and AI-assisted execution. The goal was to design a credible and adaptable identity for today's world, applying conscious technology throughout the process. The project stems from the challenge of using AI to enhance exploration and production without sacrificing strategic rigor or merely turning it into a shortcut.

The Concept

Born from a tension: the need to inject analog soul into a digital environment. The visual identity revives the raw aesthetic of '90s grunge and skate culture as an antidote to the artificiality and synthetic sterility of today's social media. The logo embodies this duality: the 'R' takes over the at sign (@), reinterpreting the quintessential digital symbol to create a new reading—almost an identity statement: 'At Roots.' In the digital age, yet anchored in its roots.

For this project, I wanted to push the capabilities of artificial intelligence beyond standard image generation. The goal was not simply to create an image, but to build a proprietary brand ambassador—a complex, distinctive avatar designed to challenge the consistency limits of AI models.

That's how Ren was born—his name means “purity” in Japanese. Designed from scratch, Ren is a young Asian man in his twenties with a highly distinctive look: a shaved head, pale blue eyes, prominent freckles, a vintage-style mustache, and tattoos meticulously designed specifically for him.

The real technical challenge was maintaining the integrity of these specific traits across multiple generations and settings. For his debut campaign, I completed the world with a product design element: custom sneakers that pay tribute to the most iconic brands in skate culture.

Early Generations

Defining the visual style was no accident; it was an exercise in deliberate iteration. The process required moving beyond the first—often unpredictable—results and calibrating the tools with precision. By continuously refining prompts and running multiple rounds of testing, I aligned AI's randomness with the original art direction, ensuring the technology executed the creative vision instead of merely suggesting it.

Once the core concept was established, I moved on to integrating the brand assets. At this stage, the identity elements designed earlier were merged with the generated imagery, bringing strategic vision and visual execution together to turn isolated explorations into a cohesive brand universe.

The search for a brand language called for movement. This reel brings the project's central narrative to life: a visual escape from the sterility of a flawless futuristic simulation, followed by a sudden landing in a raw, 'dirty,' tangible reality. The piece does more than showcase the aesthetic—it dramatizes the conflict between digital sterility and the authenticity of ROOTS.

Conclusions and Lessons Learned

ROOTS shows that traditional branding and AI workflows can—and should—coexist. The result is a brand that feels cohesive, carefully crafted, and real, achieved with a speed and flexibility that conventional methods struggle to match. That said, this project is exploratory by nature. While the quality is high, reaching a fully commercial production standard would require further iteration and even more rigorous technical polish. Ultimately, technology changes, but the principle remains: AI proposes; creative direction decides.

Update 2026

Created with Seedance 2.0

The speed at which new tools are emerging is changing how we produce and develop ideas. Today, it is possible to achieve higher-quality results in less time and with far less technical friction. Production speed is no longer an exceptional advantage; it is becoming the new standard. What truly makes the difference is not the tool itself, but the clarity of the approach and the intention behind every decision. That is the real value of the time we gain. Not doing more, but thinking better. Exploring further. Creating with greater precision. Technology helps us get there faster. Creativity defines where we are going.
